The Sky as a Protected Ceiling

'And We made the sky a protected ceiling'

The Verse
21:32
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ سَقْفًۭا مَّحْفُوظًۭا ۖ وَهُمْ عَنْ ءَايَٰتِهَا مُعْرِضُونَ
And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away.
The Scientific Finding

The Earth's atmosphere (the 'sky' in everyday Arabic) protects life from cosmic radiation, meteoroids, and extreme temperature variation. The ozone layer specifically shields life from UV radiation. The atmosphere also burns up most incoming meteoroids before they reach the surface.

The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by Charles Fabry. The role of the ozone layer in UV protection was established in the 1930s-50s. The atmosphere's role as a meteoroid shield is a 20th-century finding.

The Classical Tafsir

Classical scholars read this as a sign of Allah's protection and power. The specific protective mechanisms (ozone, atmosphere) were not part of their reading — but the general idea of a protective sky is consistent.

Classical scholars consulted: Tabari (d. 923), al-Qurtubi (d. 1273), Ibn Kathir (d. 1373), al-Jalalayn (15th c.), al-Zamakhshari (d. 1144).
The Limits of This Claim

The 'protected ceiling' is a poetic description that maps onto the atmosphere's protective function. The classical tafsir didn't enumerate ozone, UV, or meteoroids. This is a moderate-strength concordance.
