Water as the Origin of All Life

'And We made from water every living thing'

The Verses
21:30
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
24:45
Allah has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
The Scientific Finding

Modern biology confirms that all known life depends on water; water is the essential medium for cellular biochemistry. The 21:30 verse states that every living thing was made from water.

Water is the most abundant molecule in living cells (60-70% of body mass). Astrobiology's search for life elsewhere centers on the search for liquid water. The universality of water in Earth's biology is well-established.

The Classical Tafsir

Classical tafsir (Tabari, Ibn Kathir) read 21:30 as a statement of Allah's creative power and the origin of life in water. They did not frame it as a scientific statement, but the claim itself (water origin) is consistent with classical reading.

Classical scholars consulted: Tabari (d. 923), al-Qurtubi (d. 1273), Ibn Kathir (d. 1373), al-Jalalayn (15th c.), al-Zamakhshari (d. 1144).
The Limits of This Claim

The verse is theologically focused (establishing divine creation). The biological observation is a 19th-20th century finding. The classical reading of the verse supports the general claim without needing modern science to validate it.
