Stages of human development described in the Quran

The Verse

23:12-14

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن سُلَٰلَةٍۢ مِّن طِينٍۢ

And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَٰهُ نُطْفَةًۭ فِى قَرَارٍۢ مَّكِينٍۢ

Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging.

ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا ٱلنُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةًۭ فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةًۭ فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْمُضْغَةَ عِظَٰمًۭا فَكَسَوْنَا ٱلْعِظَٰمَ لَحْمًۭا ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَٰهُ خَلْقًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقِينَ

Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.

The Scientific Finding

Modern embryology describes human development in distinct stages: zygote → blastocyst → embryo → fetus. The Quranic description (drop → clinging clot → lump → bones → flesh) maps onto these stages in remarkable detail.

The progression nutfa (small drop) → alaqa (clinging clot) → mudgha (chewed lump) → bones → lahm (flesh) corresponds to documented embryonic stages. Dr. Keith Moore's *The Developing Human* (1973) became a reference point when Muslim physicians noted the congruence.

The Classical Tafsir

Classical scholars (Ibn Kathir, Jalalayn) interpreted these verses as descriptions of divine power and the creation of Adam's descendants. They did not frame them as scientific statements — they framed them as signs (ayat) of Allah's creative ability.

Classical scholars consulted: Tabari (d. 923), al-Qurtubi (d. 1273), Ibn Kathir (d. 1373), al-Jalalayn (15th c.), al-Zamakhshari (d. 1144).

The Limits of This Claim

We are not claiming the Quran is a textbook of embryology. The classical tafsir did not read it that way. We are noting a congruence between the descriptive language and later scientific observation, and letting the reader consider it.
