Pain Receptors Are in the Skin (debunked reading)
Why this popular reading of 4:56 fails — and what the verse actually says
4:56 is about the punishment of hellfire: 'Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses — We will burn them in fire; every time their skins are roasted, We will replace them with other skins, so they may taste the punishment.' Some 20th-century apologetics authors, most prominently Maurice Bucaille (1976), interpreted this as a reference to pain receptors being concentrated in the skin. This reading is anatomically false and is not supported by classical tafsir. We include this entry as a reference: to show why this genre of claim fails, not to endorse it.
Modern anatomy: nociceptors are present in skin, but also in muscles, joints, viscera, and many other tissues. The claim that pain receptors are 'primarily in the skin' is not anatomically accurate as a general statement. Bucaille's reading is one possible interpretation of the verse's emphasis on skin, but the verse's classical meaning concerns the punishment of the disbelievers in the afterlife — not an anatomical observation.
Classical scholars read 4:56 as a general statement about the consequences of sinful actions and the torment of hellfire. The anatomical reading is a 20th-century interpretation.

Anatomists and contemporary Muslim scholars have rejected the anatomical reading. The verse's actual subject is hellfire punishment, not neuroanatomy.
